CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum is reminding visitors that it is displaying the A.R. Mitchell Traveling Exhibit, from the A.R. Mitchell Museum in Trinidad, Colorado, until Monday, Jan. 20.

That’s according to a release from the museum, which states that Monday will be the final opportunity to view the artwork of one of the west’s most well-regarded artists.

“The special traveling exhibit features over 20 stunning paintings by the renowned Western artist
Arthur Roy Mitchell, known as ‘Mitch,’ along with his original sketches and a variety of
completed pieces in different mediums,” the release states.

Mitchell was born in December 1889 on his family’s ranch in Trinidad, Colorado.

“Growing up in the Wild West, he witnessed the last days of the pioneers, outlaws, and cowhands
along the Santa Fe Trail,” the release states. “These early experiences fueled his lifelong passion for capturing the spirit of the West through his art.”

Mitch worked as a cowhand and served as a drill sergeant in WWI, but afterward he began his artistic journey, studying under famed illustrator Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central Art School in New York City. “He made a name for himself in the 1920s and ’30s, illustrating over 160 Pulp Western Magazines. Despite a grim diagnosis of terminal lung cancer in 1944, Mitchell continued to live life to the fullest, contributing to the arts and his community for another 34 years,” the release states.

Though the traveling exhibit is leaving on Jan. 20, the museum features an array of other exhibits that are just as fascinating.

The Museum’s exhibits also include a new Hall of Fame display honoring six remarkable women
who have left a lasting impact on CFD and the community in celebration of the “Year of the
Cowgirl,” the release states. “Visitors will also have the final opportunity to see the Bridging Cultures exhibit, which highlights the ongoing relationship between Native American Tribes and CFD, and will be closing in May 2025. This exhibit includes Princess Bluewater’s dress and other items that tell stories from over 100 years of history. Additionally, a special exhibit commemorates Lane Frost, marking the 35th anniversary of his passing,” it adds.

The CFD Old West Museum is offering a special admission price to all Laramie County residents, through Feb. 1. With proof of residency, attendees will be admitted for $8, with children 12 and under able to enter for free.

The CFD Old West Museum is located at 4610 Carey Ave. and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will be open Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For more information, visit www.oldwestmuseum.org or follow the museum on Facebook.
