CASPER, Wyo. — Wyoming’s United States Senator John Barrasso traveled to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan with U.S. President Donald Trump for Thanksgiving.
“I’ve had the privilege since I’ve been in the Senate of visiting with Wyoming troops overseas for Thanksgiving,” Barrasso said in a video shared on Wednesday, Dec. 4. “A couple of weeks ago I talked to the president and encouraged him to go as well to Afghanistan.”
“He gave it some thought, called me back and said, ‘Let’s go.’”
Barrasso’s office says that about 370 Wyoming National Guard soldiers are on deployments in the Middle East and Europe, the largest number deployed at one time since 2009.
“You go to thank them for what they are doing, they are a long way from home, to tell them that people at home are behind them and make sure that they have everything that they need,” Barrasso said. “Because it is not just the soldiers who are serving, it’s their families at home as well.”
Barrasso joined Trump is serving the Thanksgiving meal and heard briefings from military officials about their operations.
