CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne Downtown Development Authority has announced a “mulligan” for some downtown holiday events, and one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year; after severe weather stymied Thanksgiving weekend events in Cheyenne.
The Cheyenne Christmas Parade and the Downtown Cheyenne Tree Lighting will take place on Saturday December 7, 2019. The events had originally been scheduled for the Saturday following the Thanksgiving holiday, but were cancelled when Cheyenne was under multiple travel restrictions due to severe weather in the area.
The DDA says that “Shop Small Saturday,” will also get a do-over, with “Shop Small Take2.” The unofficial event, “Shop Small Saturday” has recently been observed around the US, and is used as a way to encourage people to shop at smaller and more localized businesses, in contrast to big box store sales on Black Friday.
The weekend following the Thanksgiving holiday is often cited as one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The “Shop Small Take2” do-over is also scheduled for December 7.
“The forecast for Saturday looks great and small business owners are hoping families will come downtown shop, dine, explore, visit with Santa and enjoy an evening of holiday cheer with the rescheduled Christmas parade and tree-lighting,”
The Cheyenne DDA says they have been working with Cheyenne merchants and restaurants to help spread the word about the extra Shop Small event.
“Ten participating restaurants will be offering Small Plate Specials in addition to over twenty retailers running in-store Shop Small specials,” a DDA statement said Monday.
In addition to Shop Small Take2, residents can visit the downtown Chari-Trees display at the Plains Hotel. Each tree is decorated by a local nonprofit; and trees can be bid on or donations dropped off.
The trees are on display until December 14th.
Saturday, December 7th, also marks the beginning of “‘Pop-Up’ Santa” in downtown businesses.
On Saturday, from 10 am – noon, Santa will be in the Plains Hotel lobby with caroling and hot chocolate. From 1-3 pm, he will be at Just Dandy on 17th Street.
On Sunday, December 8th, the Santa will be at Mary’s Mountain Cookies, on Lincolnway, from 1-3 pm.
