Cheyenne Police Department to apply for $1.25 mil grant to help combat domestic violence

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Cheyenne City Council has approved a resolution that allows the Cheyenne Police Department to apply for a grant that would improve criminal justice response to domestic violence, sexual assaults, dating violence and stalking.

According to the resolution the award ceiling for the grant is $1,250,00 and the funds would be used to help reimburse expenses related to the work that CPD’s Community Advocacy Response Initiative Unit (CARI) does.

The related expenses include:

  • Overtime for domestic violence/sexual assault units and detective positions.
  • Prosecution.
  • Victim advocacy.
  • Contact training
  • Internal training
  • Various office supplies related to CARI unit.

The grant funding would come from the Office on Violence Against Women.

According to Justice.org the purpose of this grant would be to help to support and encourage state, local, and tribal governments and courts to treat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking as serious violations of criminal law requiring the coordinated involvement of the entire criminal justice system.

The grant documentation says that 45 grants are expected to be given out nationally with a total award amount of 53,000,000.
