CASPER, Wyo. — Much of the Cowboy State is experiencing smoky conditions due to wildfires in other states, according to the National Weather Service in Riverton.

“Thick smoke from wildfires in other states has been observed across much of western and central Wyoming,” the NWS said in a special weather statement on Wednesday. “The smoky conditions are expected to last at least through Friday.”

The Wyoming Department of Health recommends that elderly people, young children and those with respiratory problems minimize outdoor activity and “excessive physical exertion” while smoky conditions persist.

“Wildfire smoke is made up of a variety of pollutants, including particulate matter and ozone, which can cause respiratory health effects,” the NWS said. “”Although these people are most susceptible to health impacts, the Department of Health also advises that everyone should avoid prolonged exposure to poor air quality conditions.”

The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality offers real-time air quality data online.

The NWS in Riverton’s air quality alert applies in the following counties:

  • Big Horn
  • Hot Springs
  • Fremont
  • Johnson
  • Lincoln
  • Natrona
  • Park
  • Sublette
  • Sweetwater, Teton, and Washakie counties. * WHEN…Until 1000 AM Thursday September 17.
