Dozens of animals rescued from ‘unsafe situation’ await new homes at Cheyenne Animal Shelter

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Multiple agencies and community members worked last week to remove dozens of animals, including dogs, cats and birds, from an “unsafe situation,” according to a city release Saturday.

In total, animal control officers rescued 64 dogs, a “handful” of cats, and 13 miscellaneous birds and transported them to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter, where they “can now find new loving homes,” the release said.

Animal control responded April 16 to a call reporting about 20 large breed dogs roaming on the south side of Cheyenne. Officers located the dogs spread throughout open fields.

With the help of citizens, the city’s compliance department, and the Laramie County Sheriff’s Department, animal control officers were able to contain and transport 23 large breed dogs to the shelter, as well as “a handful more” over the next few days, the release said.

Upon contacting the dog owner, animal control “quickly became aware of the gravity of the situation the dogs and their owner were in,” the release said. “The owner accepted an offer to surrender all animals so they could receive medical care and more adequate housing,”
