Eastbound I-80 reopens after winter storm closure

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The eastbound lane of I-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie has reopened after being closed due to winter weather.

The westbound lane between Laramie and Exit 359, Junction I-25 still remains closed at this time due to a winter storm that went through the area on Thursday night.

Updates will be posted as more information becomes available.

Though storm warnings were announced throughout the evening, the sky cleared just in time for #NightRanger and #KidRock to take the stage on July 27.

Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Kid Rock brought a mix of rock, rap, and country to a packed arena, carrying the audience through his vast repertoire of music.

Night Ranger opened up for Kid Rock, and the traditional #rock band made the bleachers shake with their electrified style of #music.

Rows of cars made their way onto F.E. Warren Air Force Base July 27 to find the best seats for the Wings Over Warren Air Show.

Though the morning was cloudy, spirits were high for those who attended. Several helicopters were on display and attendees lined up to check them out before the show.

The pilots for the #Thunderbirds showed off the pure power of their F-16 Fighting Falcons, displaying the many capabilities that these amazing aircraft have to offer.

A rain shower soaked #Cheyenne, but the volunteers of the parade committee still gathered to set up for the third #GrandParade this week.

Many attendees lined up and down Capitol and Carey Avenues, decked out in their rain gear. Volunteers helped them find more shaded areas to sit so they would not get wet when enjoying the parade.

However, as soon as the parade began, the weather cleared up and the sun was shining off the streets of Cheyenne.

No one can ever take away Tuesday night from the Missouri Thunder.

And within the walls of Frontier Park Arena, the Thunder’s riders were able to celebrate a monumental occasion in style inside a building already steeped in so much history.

The Professional Bull Riders held the latter show of its two-night competition Tuesday in #Cheyenne for the event as part of the first-ever regular season for its new Team Series, a concept that turns the normally individualized world of bull riding into a squad-based league.

It was truly a new frontier for each of the eight teams involved, but only one, Missouri, managed to get the job done and win both of its five-on-five games against other squads across the two nights to be crowned the first event champions in PBR Team Series history.

Cheyenne continued to celebrate Frontier Days with its second Grand Parade this morning, July 26.

More western history was celebrated, and people both locally and internationally attended the event. The Thunderbirds also made an appearance and waved to fans as they rode by.

This is the second of four parades that take place through downtown #Cheyenne during Cheyenne Frontier Days, with the route going down Capitol Avenue and then back up Carey Avenue.

It’s a sweet tradition (literally) at #cheyennefrontierdays, and the first Pancake Breakfast of the 2022 festival got going Monday morning with plenty of hungry attendees lining up for a bite.

Held thrice annually beginning at 7 a.m. on the Monday, Wednesday and second Friday of Frontier Days, respectively, the event is officially hosted by the #Kiwanis Club of #Cheyenne but has plenty of volunteers helping out from other organizations to serve upwards of 10,000 breakfast-goers at the Cheyenne Depot Plaza for each iteration of the event.

Per the Frontier Days website, more than 100,000 pancakes, 520 gallons of coffee and 475 gallons of syrup, among other items, are made and used at no cost to the attendees, who enjoyed their meals under sunny skies and some live music Monday morning.

The night concerts are always a favorite at #cheyennefrontierdays, and the opening acts of 2022 didn’t disappoint.

Grammy-nominated country superstar Jason Aldean — along with supporting acts Gabby Barrett and John Morgan — rocked the Frontier Nights stage Friday night as part of the first of the 10-day festival’s seven shows this year.

The Georgia-born Aldean, who has reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s top country songs list 27 times (with hits such as “Big Green Tractor” and “You Make It Easy”), returned to Frontier Nights for the first time since 2013 to much fanfare as the 45-year-old put on a show worth the wait.

The “Daddy of ’em All” isn’t made possible because of the work of just one person.

Though #CheyenneFrontierDays is what #Wyoming’s capital city is most known for, becoming ingrained in the city’s culture through over a century of celebrating Western culture, it doesn’t just spring up out of the ground naturally.

The event takes an army to put on, one that’s at least 2,500 people strong of volunteer labor. That year-round work builds connections in the meantime, and there’s one way in particular that many members of the volunteer committees each responsible for various roles around Frontier Park describe that relationship.

Workmen crowded near the Albany Bar and Grill in the Depot Plaza on Thursday, July 21, as they set the pedestal for one of eight statues being installed throughout the city.

The statue, “Comparing Time,” was created by artist Joey Bainer and now sits looking toward the Depot as a testimony to Cheyenne’s locomotive history.

It was the first in what was a day of installations for local mason Don “Dog” Jones and his crew. They brought the prefabricated pedestals, as well as the statues, to their respective locations to beat the clock before Frontier Days arrives.

The total transformation of the former Central Plaza Hotel on 1719 Central Ave. is going to come in spurts, but the project is about to reach a major milestone.

And when the Paris West restaurant on the bottom floor of the building finally gets up and running with all of its bells and whistles, those involved aren’t just gunning for local praise. They’re looking for national and international acclaim.

Cassie and Chance Pennock have learned plenty about the tricks of the retail trade in the little over a year that they’ve run Creative Compass Gifts.

But above nearly everything else, the duo has found that location and foot traffic are especially important factors. So when the gift and party store’s previous spot off of Logan Avenue wasn’t cutting it, they shopped around for new digs to post up at.

Work and final preparations are being done for Creative Compass Gifts to open up its new location at the #FrontierMall in a storefront between Bourbon Street Candy and Go! Calendars, Games & Toys, with the Pennocks stating that they’re expecting to reopen there at 10 a.m. Friday, just in time for #cheyennefrontierdays.

There aren’t many occasions throughout the year when Wyomingites are brought together en masse into one place.

So when #JennieGordon, the First Lady of #Wyoming and wife of Gov. Mark Gordon, wants to forge partnerships for the #WyomingHungerInitiative — a statewide effort to end food insecurity that she helped launch in 2019 — she tries to take advantage when she can.

And with #CheyenneFrontierDays kicking off this week, there are few better times to do so.

For the second year running, the program is partnering with the “Daddy of ’em All” by selling a T-shirt featuring both organizations’ logos to support the initiative’s mission, while July 30 will officially be “Wyoming Hunger Initiative Day” during both the Grand Parade and rodeo.

After approval at the July 18 meeting by the Board of Trustees, #LaramieCounty School District 1 is proud to announce Dr. Karen Delbridge as the new principal for Central High School.

Delbridge has served as Central’s associate principal since 2018, and in that role has taken on the responsibilities of head principal in the absence of former principal Fred George.

As associate principal, she worked to promote student achievement by providing staff professional development, monitored and evaluated educational programs, worked with the school’s counseling program, and collaborated with student club sponsors.

Jerry and Pamela Sterling wanted to give the people of #Cheyenne an outlet to learn self-defense strategies without the rigor of competition seen in other martial arts.

And in a sweltering space that they share with Evolve Fitness at 6002 U.S. Highway 30 in Cheyenne, the husband and wife co-owners and instructors have turned that idea into reality.

Legends Self-Defense Martial Arts, which opened for business last week, sees the Sterlings teach students of all ages the ways of to-shin do — a Westernized, modern version of the ancient Japanese martial art of ninjutsu — through various classes designed to help participants learn self-defense techniques to protect themselves in a variety of scenarios.

Building preparation for as many emergency scenarios as possible, #Cheyenne Fire Rescue conducted specialized rescue training operations this past week in downtown.

As part of the department’s Specialized Aerial Rescue Training that took place from Tuesday through Thursday, ladder truck crews participated in a series of scenarios intended to replicate high-risk rescue conditions where victim’s lives could be in danger.

In one such exercise, a rescue mannequin — not a person, as Cheyenne Firefighters clarified in a Facebook post Friday morning — was suspended along a downtown building as rescue crews worked up to a simulation of a rooftop worker being stranded on the side of a building.

Trinidad Serrano’s idea has came a long way — and taken on a new form in the process.

The local tattoo artist and owner of The T.R.I.B.E. Zoo LLC Tattoo shop on Lincolnway in downtown was the main force behind the start of the annual 4-Ever West Tattoo Festival seven years ago, now held every year in Cheyenne as a gathering of ink artists and enthusiasts from across the United States. Back in the event’s beginnings, Serrano paid for everything merely out of a love for the craft, he said.

But last year, the City of Cheyenne reached out to Serrano and offered its assistance, pitching the idea of combining multiple events (including the #tattoo festival) together, namely those the city describes as “urban arts culture and diversity,” for a weekend-long festival in the #Cheyenne Depot Plaza.

And thus, the #CheyenneCultureExpo — the umbrella event to celebrate the city’s creative side and those that partake in it — was born.
