Crazy Woman Canyon road to close for the summer

GILLETTE, Wyo. — The road through Crazy Woman Canyon in the Big Horn Mountains will close for the remainder of the summer for repairs starting Monday, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Crazy Woman Canyon Road will close every weekday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting July 18 and will not fully reopen until Sept. 9 while under construction, aside from a brief exception from July 25 to July 29, per the USFS.

The closure is necessary given how narrow the canyon is and the road’s proximity to Crazy Woman Creek, both of which make it impossible to build detours around the construction, USFS says.

The USFS plans to build a temporary bridge to protect a historic, weight-limited bridge from heavy equipment and truck traffic during construction around 1.7 miles from the start of the canyon off Highway 16.
