CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Scammers are targeting customers of the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities and Black Hills Energy, the Cheyenne Police Department warns.
“Scammers are posing as employees from the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities or Black Hills Energy in order to request credit card information over the phone,” the police wrote in a social media post.
That post shared a Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities post reporting the scam, in which customers receive a telephone call with the scammer claiming to be with the board. The caller asks customers to wire money or provide credit card information for payment on excessive water use or risk having the water shut off.
The Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities is encouraging customers to be vigilant against phone and identity scams. It advises customers to hang up on callers claiming to be with the board and then to call the Customer Service number at 307-637-6460. They may also visit the lobby at 2416 Snyder Ave.
Cheyenne police echoed the advice for anyone receiving a call from a business or entity that claims to be seeking money.
“If you are ever in doubt about the legitimacy of the person calling you, hang up and call the business/utility directly to confirm your account status,” the police wrote.
