CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne City Council unanimously approved a resolution during its afternoon meeting that would support more low-income housing in the city.
The resolution authorizes the city to submit a $1.2 million grant request to the Local Government Project ARPA Grant Application and State Loan and Investment Board to purchase blighted property on 15th Street.
The city identified that the 2.7 acres of property, located near the Habitat for Humanity of Laramie County office, can be developed in into a combination of affordable housing rental, habitats homes and other amenities, the resolution’s memorandum states.
The Office of State Lands and Investments is accepting applications for local government projects from American Rescue Plan Act funds appropriated during the 2023 Legislative Session. The funds will be used to meet affordable housing and infrastructure needs in Wyoming, according to the resolution. Federal guidance allows the use of ARPA funds for the acquisition, rehabilitation and new construction of affordable homeownership or rental housing. The grant is due Aug. 4 and the resolution is a requirement of the application.
Dan Dorsch, executive director for Habitat of Humanity of Laramie County, said the land acquisition will benefit the community.
“As you all know, housing is an issue in this town,” he said during the meeting. “The acquisition of property would add housing stock to our community and be a good community benefit.”
