CHEYENNE, Wyo. — If you thought cooking a meal in a kitchen was challenging, try doing it with only cast iron equipment and an open flame.

Every day for Cheyenne Frontier Days, several authentic chuckwagon crews have provided free cooking demonstrations at Old Frontier Town. At around 5 p.m. each day, the crews serve home-cooked meals including ribeye steak, chicken-fried steak and brisket to attendees. At noontime on Saturday, July 29, the different wagons will participate in a chuckwagon cook-off, where they will be judged on the kinds of food they produced, their use of wagon design tools and the quality of their campsite.

A chuckwagon is a type of mobile kitchen that can be stored, along with food and cooking equipment, in a covered wagon. The wagons became popular in the 19th century, when settlers traveled across the U.S and Canada.
