CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne City Council voted at their meeting this evening to adopt a resolution supporting the decriminalization of marijuana in the state.

The council voted 5-2 in favor of the resolution, with Councilmembers Tom Segrave and Michelle Aldrich voting against it.

With the adoption, the city can present the resolution to the Wyoming Association of Municipalities to bring interim conversations for the state legislature, present to other municipalities to endorse their own resolutions of support and present to any state legislator for sponsorship endorsements and support, the resolution states.

Wyoming is one of four states — alongside Idaho, Kansas and South Dakota — where both recreational and medicinal marijuana use are illegal. It also belongs to a small majority of states that impose fines and jail time for residents who possess less than an ounce of marijuana.

According to the 2020 Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center conducted by the University of Wyoming, 54% of residents say they support allowing adults in Wyoming to legally possess cannabis for personal use, and 85% of residents say they support the legalization of cannabis for medical purposes.

A full story on the council’s decision will be available on Cap City News tonight.
