CHEYENNE, Wyo. — During their afternoon meeting, the Laramie County Commissioners approved a grant agreement with the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center to purchase suicide prevention educational materials.
The agreement was authorized through the commissioners’ consent agenda. The center will now be able to buy $2,500 worth of resource materials, such as books and journals, for families and friends to utilize. The materials will provide a quick response to those at risk for suicidal thoughts or actions, a memo to the commissioners states.
September is observed as Suicide Awareness month in the U.S. In 2022, 24 county residents died by suicide, according to the Laramie County Coroner’s Office. The Wyoming Department of Health states that suicide rates have increased from 17 deaths per 100,000 people in 2005 to 31.1 deaths per 100,000 people in 2020.
