CHEYENNE, Wyo. — On Monday, the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office took an inmate work crew to the Burns Cemetery to help with mowing, weed eating, clearing tumbleweeds off the fences and picking up garbage.

The inmates prepared the cemetery for Memorial Day, when visitors will come to visit deceased family members who served in the military.

“When I brought this idea to the inmates, they were excited to give back to the community,” Sheriff Brian Kozak said. “The inmates had heartfelt pride when community members thanked them for their hard work.”

Kozak said those who took part in the cleaning crew are low-risk inmates who have demonstrated good behavior while incarcerated. Inmates were also fitted with GPS trackers prior to leaving the facility, and are supervised by sheriff’s deputies.

Kozak said that people who have a project that they’d like the crew to help with can call 307-633-4745. The department asks that lunch be provided for inmates while working on local projects.
