CHEYENNE, Wyo. — An 8-year-old Cheyenne boy was left with serious injuries in early November after being hit by a car at a crosswalk. Cheyenne police investigated the incident and chose not to charge the driver.
Cheyenne police responded to a vehicle collision Nov. 4 near the intersection of Windmill Road and East 10th Street, according to CPD public information officer Alex Farkas. The boy was taken to the hospital. He came to the intersection and reportedly noticed the oncoming car but was unable to stop his bicycle. He then entered the road, and the oncoming 83-year-old driver didn’t see him prior to the collision.
The female driver stayed on scene, according to the CPD’s statement. The department investigated facts surrounding the incident and decided not to issue criminal charges against the driver after the driver was not found to be driving recklessly, speeding or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“We recognize the deep impact this accident had on everyone involved,” Farkas said in the department’s official statement. “This is a difficult reminder that staying alert on or around our roadways is a critical part of keeping our community safe.”
Update, Nov. 19: This story was updated to remove info on a GoFundMe page the boy’s family started following the accident. The boy’s name was also taken out. These changes were made at the request of the boy’s mother, Danielle Cain.
