CASPER, Wyo. — Coming back from out of state and noticing something’s different about Wyoming? It’s not your imagination — the Wyoming Department of Transportation has officially replaced all the state’s familiar welcome signs with modern ones. What’s going to happen to the old signs? Well, they could be yours, as WYDOT is currently selling multiple at auction.
The above picture is surely familiar to residents used to coming and going between Wyoming and surrounding states, but the signs have actually been phased out since late last year. A more contemporary take on the state’s welcome sign now stands where these old vestiges of the rugged Wyoming frontiers once stood.
For those especially nostalgic for the old signs, multiple are currently being auctioned off for the next two weeks on an auction site affiliated with the department.
Public Surplus is a company that specializes in auctioning off government agencies’ unwanted or surplus equipment. Visitors can find just about everything under the sun, from school buses to scrap metal. The sheer volume of inventory can be overwhelming, so for quick access to the Wyoming welcome signs, click here.
As of Feb. 11, seven signs are currently being battled for. All listed signs are 4 feet tall and 8 feet wide and may come plastered with a variety of graffiti and damage, not to mention potential bullet holes. Think of them as coming with built-in character.
Bidding started for all signs at $100 and is increasing fast. The auction is currently set to close Feb. 25. The seven lucky winners will be able to pick up their new prize in Cheyenne when the auction is complete.
