CASPER, Wyo. — During its September meeting in Buffalo, the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission voted to invest $500,000 toward the Kemmerer wildlife crossing project along U.S. Highway 189.

The multi-phase project involves adding underpasses, an overpass and game fencing in order to help reduce collisions between vehicles and animals — mule deer and pronghorn in particular — according to Game and Fish.

Statewide, there are an average of 6,000 collisions between vehicles and big game per year, resulting in $24–$29 million in personal injury costs, according to the Wyldlife Fund. Wildlife crossing projects have the potential to reduce crashes by 80–90%, the fund said.

Details about the phases for the U.S. Highway 189 wildlife crossing project are available from the Wyldlife Fund.
