CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The city of Cheyenne has altered its municipal code so that anyone found driving without vehicle insurance can be sentenced to jail.

City councilmembers passed an ordinance Monday amending Title 10, Vehicles and Traffic, of the city’s municipal code. The chapter stipulates that the Cheyenne Municipal Court can enforce a jail sentence for driving with a suspended license or while intoxicated. Now, the City Council has included another crime on this list: failure to maintain liability insurance.

Mayor Patrick Collins said the purpose of the amendment is to better align city code with state law.

According to the city code, the city court can enforce a maximum sentence of six months in jail, a $750 fine or both to anyone found guilty of driving without insurance. The following crimes can carry the same punishment:

  • Driving recklessly
  • Driving while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance
  • Driving with a canceled, suspended or revoked license
  • Fleeing or attempting to escape police officers
  • Failing to stop a vehicle at an accident if the incident causes death or personal injury
