CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Laramie County Assessor Todd Ernst announced today that assessment schedules for the 2024 tax year have been mailed to property owners. These documents detail the fair market values as of Jan. 1, 2024, which are important for calculating upcoming property taxes.
Property assessments are annual evaluations performed to determine the current market value of properties, ensuring owners pay an appropriate amount of taxes.
“Properties throughout Wyoming are assessed to the owner of record and valued as they existed as of January 1st each year,” Ernst states in a press release.
The assessment schedules are preliminary and use last year’s mill levies to estimate the forthcoming taxes.
“Property owners should review the amount noted as ‘Total Valuation Used to Calculate Tax’ and determine if it reflects the property’s value if sold on January 1, 2024,” Ernst advised.
Actual tax amounts will be finalized in September, when new mill levies are set based on local budget needs.
Owners disagreeing with the assessed values have until May 10 to appeal — an opportunity that requires prompt attention.
“During the 30-day period, access to sales data used for assessments is granted, but only through a personal visit to the Assessor’s office,” Ernst states
This period also allows property owners to submit additional information such as appraisals or special conditions affecting property values.
Wyoming veterans should note the May 28 deadline to apply for property tax exemptions. Veterans must have discharge papers on file with the county to qualify. If discharge papers and information necessary to qualify for the exemption have previously been provided, notification may be done by calling the office.
