CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Renovations for the county’s only formal playground have now progressed one step forward.
County commissioners approved a grant Tuesday from the Cheyenne Community Recreation District. The $50,000 grant will be utilized for new playground equipment at the north end of Clear Creek Park, the county’s sole formal park. The park is located in west Cheyenne off Southwest Drive.
The county is planning to match the grant with $120,873.06, according to the original grant request from June. The project will be financed through voter-approved sixth-cent funds.
“The County Commissioners and the Recreation Board have collaborated to revive this park and make it a destination place for families and groups in the community,” the original grant request states.
The application adds that the current equipment from the 1990s is showing wear and tear, contains graffiti and must be monitored for safety. It is also too small, and therefore limits the number of youth who can play there.
“This project would enhance recreational opportunities afforded to youth in Laramie County. Clear Creek Park is located in an area that is considered low to moderate income and the youth that live and play in this area do not always have the best access to safe recreational activities. This project would aid in creating a safe area for fun and socialization along with promoting exercise and fitness.”
Aside from the playground project, commissioners approved a subgrantee agreement with the Greater Wyoming Big Brothers Big Sisters of Laramie County, an organization that provides programming to youth ages 5–16 and engages with at-risk families. The county has awarded BBBS $13,264.29 to provide youth with one-on-one mentoring, as well as case management for kids and parents. The grant was originally awarded to the county by the Wyoming Department of Family Services.
