CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The 2024 election season officially kicks off at 8 a.m. Thursday, May 16 with the start of candidate filing for the Aug. 20 primary election. The Laramie County Clerk’s office will accept applications for county commissioner, assessor and political party precinct committee member through 5 p.m. Friday, May 31.
In a news release Tuesday, Laramie County Clerk Debra Lee noted that candidates for federal and state offices must file with the Secretary of State, while those running for municipal offices in Cheyenne or Pine Bluffs must file with their respective city clerks.
The start of candidate filing also signals the end of voters’ ability to change their political party before
the primary election. Lee reminds registered voters that May 15 is the last chance to change party affiliation ahead of the August primary election. A state law enacted last year prohibits registrants from changing parties from May 16, the start of candidate filing, through Primary Election Day, Aug. 20. Registrants can change party affiliation at the county clerk’s election office or with the town clerk in Albin or Burns.
Applications are available on the Laramie County Clerk’s election page here or may be picked up at the election office in the Laramie County Governmental Complex, 309 W. 20th St., Ste. 1500. Applications may be filed in person, by mail, by email to election@laramiecountywy.gov or by fax at 307-633-4240. Applicants for county offices are required to pay a $100 filing fee.
For more information on candidate filing, voter registration or changing party affiliation, call the
election office at 307-633-4242 or visit the clerk’s election page here. Laramie County candidate rosters will be updated by 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the filing period.
