Primary election results 2024: Three candidates for City Council Ward III to face off in general election

Only three people are running for City Council in Ward III, allowing each candidate to automatically advance onto November's general election ballot.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The three candidates vying for a seat on Cheyenne City Council for Ward III will each appear on the general election ballot in November.

Three candidates for Cheyenne City Council Ward III — Michelle Aldrich, Richard Johnson and Mark Moody — will appear on the general election ballot on Nov. 5. 

For this year’s election cycle, City Council’s Ward III has two seats available. Aldrich and Johnson are both incumbents.

For the primary election, the four City Council Ward III candidates who receive the highest number of votes advance to the Nov. 5 general election, according to Laramie County Clerk Debra Lee. However, only three people ran in City Council’s Ward III race, allowing each candidate to automatically advance to November’s ballot.

The following is the final vote count for each candidate, per results from the Laramie County Clerk’s Office:

  • Michelle Aldrich: 2,023
  • Mark A. Moody: 1,605
  • Richard Johnson: 1,363
  • Write-In Totals: 63
  • Total Votes Cast: 5,054

About the City Council candidates

In her Q&A with Cap City News, incumbent Michelle Aldrich describes herself as fiscally conservative. Currently, she is the chair of the city’s Finance Committee. She has endeavored to engage with and hear from the community, which led her to launch the monthly “City Council and Coffee” open house. The following items are the top three initiatives she would like to work on as a councilmember:

  • Providing safe water to the community and maintaining infrastructure
  • Making staffing for public safety roles, such as emergency responders, a priority
  • Maintaining roads, sidewalk paths and curb and gutter

Richard Johnson is running for a third term on City Council. In his Q&A, Johnson says he identifies as “an independent thinker and not a DC think tank.” He says he puts on an emphasis on “we” when getting work done. The following items are the top three initiatives he would like to work on as a councilmember:

  • The intersection near the COMEA Shelter bus stop, which he describes as dangerous
  • Creating a rental registry and making available a Tenant Bill of Rights
  • Promoting amenities and tourism in Cheyenne

In his Q&A for Cap City News, Mark Moody said he is operating under the motto of “new leadership in Cheyenne.” He hopes to bring a fresh perspective and abide by traditional Wyoming values. The following items are the top three initiatives he would like to work on as a councilmember:

  • Addressing crime, such as late-night speeding and enacting an ordinance to prohibit Cheyenne from becoming a “sanctuary city for illegal immigrants”
  • Finding solutions for affordable housing and continually reviewing the city’s UDC regulations
  • Allowing Ward III residents to voice their concerns with councilmembers, with the mayor and via public input on large projects
