CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Local hunger relief organizations are ready to feed hungry mouths following scenic hikes this coming fall season.
On Oct. 5, Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne is hosting its third-annual “Hike for Hunger” event to raise awareness about food insecurity while enjoying a day outside in Wyoming nature. The day out will be at Hynds Lodge and Amphitheater, just north of Curt Gowdy State Park, at 1360 Hynds Lodge Road.
Hikers will travel half a mile through Beaver Creek Trail with an experienced guide. Bands Avenue and Sarah Slaton & the Great Perhaps will perform as attendees can enjoy games, visit educational booths and enjoy a lunch courtesy of Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne.
The Cheyenne organization is hosting the outdoors event in cooperation with other local hunger relief nonprofits, including Needs Inc., LCCC Food Pantry and the University of Wyoming Food Pantry. The goal with the event is to raise awareness about food insecurity as the state currently faces a “food insecurity crisis,” said Kristen-Erin Balderaz, executive director of Needs Inc.
“Hike for Hunger reminds us that there is still so much work to do in keeping our neighbors fed,” Erin Baldarez said in a news release.
Volunteers can also sign up to help set up equipment, assist with parking and registration, be a photo guide or help out in other tasks. To sign up, click here.
Anyone who pre-registers online here by Sept. 18 will receive an event shirt and lunch. The cost to register per hiker is $50 or $25 for those ages 12 and under. Anyone with additional information can contact Rhianna Brand at 307-635-5542 or rbrand@mealsonwheelsofcheyenne.com.
