CHEYENNE, Wyo. — January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and Cheyenne Laramie County Public Health is shining a spotlight on it throughout the month.

That’s according to a release from CLCPH that offered a brief description of how cervical cancer could begin, as well as ways to combat it.

“A cervix connects the uterus and the birth canal (vagina),” the release states. “When abnormal cells in the cervix grow out of control, this can lead to cervical cancer.  Anyone with a cervix is at risk of cervical cancer; however, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, is the leading cause.”

The release notes that anybody could be affected with HPV. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that HPV causes nearly 36,000 cases of cancer in men and women each year and thatd nearly everyone who is not vaccinated will get HPV at some point in their lives.

The CDC also recommends that boys and girls get the HPV vaccine when they are 11–12 years of age.

“Every year HPV and cervical cancer impact the lives of so many people. Our clinics are here to help, whether it’s through vaccinations, exams or testing,” said Family Planning Nurse Practitioner Lindy Gray.

According to the release, the Immunization Clinic at CLCPH offers various vaccinations, including the HPV vaccine.

Additionally, the Family Planning Clinic at CLCPH offers sexually transmitted infection, or STI, testing; STI treatment; and reproductive wellness exams for all gender identities. It also offers Pap smears.

CLCPH pledges that all services are confidential and all ages are welcome. Only the consent of the patient is needed to receive services.

“Community health is our mission, and we hope you make it yours. If you do not have insurance, there are options for you to still get the screening and treatment you deserve. Our family planning clinic accepts Medicaid and most private insurance and provides services on a sliding fee scale to those who qualify.  Staff can also help with enrollment in the Wyoming Cancer Program. Give us a call to see how we can help you,” said Director of Nursing Kasey Mullins, MSN, RN.

CLCPH clinic hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 307-633-4000 or visit clcpublichealth.org for more information.
