UPDATE: Wyoming Department of Health Deputy Director Stefan Johansson said on Friday that changes in federal requirements for reporting hospital capacity data is the reason ICU room data for Wyoming hospitals is temporarily unavailable.

The Wyoming Department of Health reports that 19 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized across the state as of Friday, July 17. That is up one from the 18 COVID patients in Wyoming hospitals on Thursday.

The Cheyenne Regional Medical Center reportedly has three COVID patients on Friday, the same number the hospital has had since July 11. Evanston Regional Hospital, which had no COVID patients Thursday, reportedly has one as of Friday.

The 19 COVID-19 patients as of Friday are at the following hospitals:

  • Ivinson Memorial Hospital: 5
  • Wyoming Medical Center: 3
  • Cheyenne Regional Medical Center: 3
  • Memorial Hospital Sweetwater County: 2
  • Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital: 1
  • Powell Valley Health Care: 1
  • St. John’s Medical Center: 1
  • Campbell County Memorial Hospital: 1
  • SageWest Health Care-Lander: 1
  • Evanston Regional Hospital: 1

Peak COVID-19 patient hospitalization in Wyoming occurred on April 20-21 when 23 patients were hospitalized across the state.

The Wyoming Department of Health generally shares other data about overall hospital capacity such as the number of intensive care unit beds or ventilators in use.

However, ICU data was not provided on Friday.

“As part of the transition to a new HHS (Health and Humans Services) data system, we are experiencing data quality / reporting problems with this indicator and are working with hospitals to resolve,” the Wyoming Department of Health said.

Wyoming Department of Health Deputy Director Stefan Johansson said on Friday that changes in federal requirements for reporting hospital capacity data is the reason ICU room data for Wyoming hospitals is temporarily unavailable.

Other data is still available for other hospital resources. While these hospital resources are not exclusively used to attend to COVID-19 patients, this data gives a sense of the resources Wyoming hospitals have available to deal with a potential surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

Natrona County health officers have explained that hospital capacity to care for not only COVID patients but also other patients, such as people suffering heart attacks or strokes, is one of the primary concerns.

Four of the total 183 available ventilators, which are sometimes used to treat COVID-19 patients, were in use across Wyoming, according to Friday’s data. None of the 23 available ventilators at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center were reportedly in use.

Two ventilators at the Wyoming Medical Center, one at the Washakie Medical Center and one at the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital were reportedly in use Friday. No more than 10 ventilators have been in use since May 9.

Hospitals across the state have conducted a total of 9,350 COVID-19 tests as of July 9. 2.3% of those tests have come back positive. The Wyoming Department of Health reports a total of 54,917 COVID-19 tests complete across the state.

There have been 1,644 laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Wyoming and 382 probable cases through 3 pm Thursday. 24 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported.

The Wyoming Department of Health also reports the average number of lab confirmed COVID-19 cases reported per day as follows:

  • 21 day average: 27.38
  • 14 day average: 26.93
  • 7 day average: 27.43

The Wyoming Department of Health reports hospital capacity data as follows (note that not all the data is COVID-19 specific. Both total capacity and used hospital resource data can vary from day to day):

The Wyoming Department of Health provides COVID-19 case, variant, death, testing, hospital and vaccine data online. The department also shares information about how the data can be interpreted. COVID-19 safety recommendations are available from the CDC.
