CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Travelers in southeastern Wyoming are facing restrictions due to high winds on Interstate 80 and other highways. Gusting winds have created extreme blowover risks, leading to closures for certain vehicles.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation reported closures for all high-profile vehicles under 40,000 gross vehicle weight, or GVW, between Laramie and Cheyenne. Additionally, a width restriction of 20 feet is in effect between mileposts 342.56 and 342.66 on eastbound I-80 near Otto Road.
West of Cheyenne, dangerous winds extend through Arlington, Elk Mountain and Walcott Junction, impacting vehicle safety. These sections remain closed to light and high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW. The blowover risk is classified as extreme.
Although roads east of Cheyenne, including Pine Bluffs and the Nebraska border, remain open, strong winds could affect travel conditions. WYDOT encourages drivers to check conditions frequently and avoid unnecessary travel if operating high-profile or light vehicles.
For real-time updates, drivers can visit WYDOT’s road condition website or call 511.
