High winds prompt closures for high-profile vehicles across Wyoming highways

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — High winds continue to cause significant travel impacts across Wyoming, with closures to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 gross vehicle weight — or GVW — implemented on multiple highways. The Wyoming Department of Transportation has issued extreme blowover risk advisories for several routes, alongside forecasts for high crosswinds.

As of Jan. 10 at 3 p.m., the following closures are listed on WYDOT’s Closures & Advisories web page:

Interstate 80

  • Rawlins to Walcott Junction (Exit 235): Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • Walcott Junction (Exit 235) to WYO 72 (Exit 255): Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • WYO 72 (Exit 255) to Wagonhound Road (Exit 267): Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • Wagonhound Road (Exit 267) to Arlington: Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • Arlington to Cooper Cove Road (Exit 279): Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • Cooper Cove Road (Exit 279) to Quealy Dome (Exit 290): Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • Quealy Dome (Exit 290) to Laramie: Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.

Forecast for Interstate 80

  • Cheyenne to Laramie: Crosswinds exceeding 60 mph are expected from 11 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday.
  • Laramie to Rawlins: Crosswinds exceeding 60 mph are expected from 8 a.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Saturday

Interstate 25

  • Colorado to Cheyenne: Open to passenger vehicles; crosswinds exceeding 55 mph are expected from 11 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Saturday.
  • Cheyenne to Wheatland: Open to passenger vehicles; crosswinds exceeding 55 mph are expected from 11 a.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday.
  • Wheatland to Douglas: Open to passenger vehicles; crosswinds exceeding 55 mph are expected from 8 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Saturday.

U.S. Highway 30

  • Rawlins to Walcott Junction: Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • Walcott Junction to Hanna Junction: Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • Hanna Junction to Medicine Bow: Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • Medicine Bow to Rock River: Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.

  • Rawlins to Laramie: Crosswinds exceeding 60 mph are expected through Saturday morning.

U.S. Highway 287

  • Laramie to WYO 34 Closure Gate: Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
  • WYO 34 Closure Gate to Mile Marker 308: Open to passenger vehicles; closed to high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.

  • Laramie to Rawlins: Crosswinds exceeding 55 mph are expected through Saturday morning.

  • Highway 28 South Pass: Crosswinds exceeding 60 mph are expected from 7 p.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday
