CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Southeast Wyoming continues to experience dangerous travel conditions Tuesday, with high winds, blowing snow and icy roads reported across the region. Drivers are warned to expect reduced visibility and extreme blowover risks, with several closures and restrictions in place, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
Interstate 25: High winds and closures for light vehicles
On I-25, the stretch between the Colorado State Line and Cheyenne is slick in spots with dangerous winds, blowing snow and reduced visibility. WYDOT has issued an extreme blowover risk advisory, and the roadway is closed to all high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
The same conditions extend north to Exit 29, Whitaker Road, where the restriction is raised to vehicles under 50,000 GVW.
Between Exit 335, Buford, and Exit 359, Junction I-25, dry conditions are reported, but dangerous winds and blowing snow create visibility challenges. This stretch also carries an extreme blowover risk, with closures in place for all high-profile vehicles under 40,000 GVW.
Service roads and highways
The Cheyenne Service Road, between the Archer Interchange and Wyoming Highway 217, is dry but experiencing blowing snow. Meanwhile, WYO 225, connecting Otto Road and Cheyenne, is slick in spots with dangerous winds and blowing snow. It is also under an extreme blowover risk advisory.
U.S. 85, running between the Colorado State Line and Cheyenne, as well as northward to Meriden, is slick in spots with strong winds and blowing snow. Similar conditions are reported on WYO 210 (Happy Jack Road), with visibility sharply reduced near Curt Gowdy State Park, where dangerous winds make travel particularly hazardous.
WYO 211 (Horse Creek Road) and WYO 222 (near Otto Road) remain slick with blowing snow, while truck weight restrictions are in place on WYO 211. Drivers should prepare for weight limits on specific sections of the road, including single-unit vehicles and truck-and-trailer combinations.
Advisories and weather
High-profile vehicles, including campers and tractor-trailers, face significant hazards on most routes due to gusts reaching 55 mph in some areas. These conditions increase the risk of rollovers and require extreme caution.
In addition to hazardous road conditions, temperatures across southeast Wyoming remain frigid, with windchill values ranging from minus 10 to minus 25 degrees. The National Weather Service in Cheyenne warns of continued high winds through the day, with gusts as high as 55 mph in some locations. A high wind warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with conditions expected to ease overnight.
WYDOT urges travelers to check the latest road conditions and closures through wyoroad.info or by dialing 511 before traveling. Motorists should also ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies, including blankets, food and water, given the severe weather conditions.
