LARAMIE, Wyo. — University of Wyoming senior kicker John Hoyland was recently recognized as one of the top place-kickers in college football, earning a spot on the preseason watchlist for the Lou Groza Award, which honors each year’s best kicker. This marks the third time that Hoyland has been placed on the list of preseason favorites for the distinction.

Hoyland was one of 30 players named to the preseason watchlist.

Hoyland has connected on 58 career field goals at a roughly 80% rate. He is fifth in career scoring at UW with 296 points. He is also just one field goal away from tying Cooper Rothe’s school record for the most career field goals.

Hoyland appeared and started all 13 games at kicker for the Cowboys last year. He was 13-of-20 on his field goal attempts over the course of the season. He was a perfect 10–10 from inside 45 yards and recorded three field goals of 50 yards or longer. He recorded a career-high 56-yarder in both the Texas Tech and Portland State games. He also hit a 52-yard field goal in the Arizona Bowl.

The 33rd Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes the three finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet on Dec. 9.
