LARAMIE, Wyo. — Following a sweep over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley earlier in the day, the Cowgirls rallied for another win against the University of Akron. At this point early in the season, the team holds onto its perfect record another day.

The second leg of the Cowgirls’ battle in Ohio at the Akron and Cleveland State Dual Tournament was harder fought than the previous. This time, Akron took UW all the way to the fifth and final set, where the Cowgirls would decisively take it with a 6–2 run at the very end, concluding in a 3–2 victory for Wyoming.

This was a game of highs for the Cowgirls in other ways as well. Sophomore Paige Lauterwasser not only led her team in kills, but also recorded a career high with 20, recording 13 digs and four blocks as well. Similarly, sophomore Sarah Holcomb recorded a career high of 15 kills and six blocks to boot. Grad student Sonte Stewart, looking to join the career-high club, contributed 10 kills.

Senior Kayla Mazzoca, in her homecoming to her native area of Ohio, led the Cowgirls defensively with eight blocks. Senior Kasia Partyka recorded a season-high 50 assists on top of 16 digs as well. All in all, the Cowgirls were ready to stun tonight.

Akron won the day in aces, 6–4, and just barely outplayed Wyoming in assists 64–63, but Wyoming dominated in nearly every other category. When all was said and done, Wyoming hit at .240 to Akron’s .168.

Before the Cowgirls can head home, they must face Cleveland State to close out the tournament. If they can clinch it tomorrow at 10 a.m., that perfect record continues to 5–0.
