LARAMIE, Wyo. — Thanks to an all-time performance against a talented conference rival team and a big win against Air Force before that, Allyson Fertig is the Mountain West Player of the Week for the week of Monday, Jan. 27.
She trumps all other women’s basketball players in all nine current Mountain West teams. This is also the second time she’s accomplished that this season and the fifth time in her entire college career — all with Wyoming.
In last Wednesday’s game against Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Feritg scored 15 points, grabbed a steal, blocked five shots and snatched nine rebounds. She would also turn the ball over zero times that night. The Cowgirls won that game 62–50, shooting at .643.
Although the Cowgirls wouldn’t win their next matchup, against long-time rival Colorado State, Fertig would have what is arguably one of the best performances of her time with the University of Wyoming.
Fertig would score a career-high 34 points Saturday. She also led her team with 15 rebounds. Though Colorado State would win 61–56, the Cowgirls put up a big defensive performance, keeping Ram Emma Ronsiek to just 20 points.
Fertig also won the conference’s Co-Preseason Player of the Year, sharing the accolade with the aforementioned Ronsiek. In speaking about the fated Border War game earlier this season, where she will again face Ronsiek, Fertig said that her next big goal was to win the rematch in Fort Collins.
“It’s a good rivalry. We’re playing the other Co-Player of the Year in her first year in the Mountain West,” Fertig said. “I’m excited to see what she does in the Mountain West. But overall, it’s a fun game because the fans get into it and its close enough that people can travel.”
That game will take place in Fort Collins on March 1. Before then, however, the Cowgirls have a long slate of games to play. They travel next to San Jose, California, where they will take on the Spartans at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
