CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Christmas Eve has arrived, and with it has come colder temperatures and a dusting of snow.
The National Weather Service in Cheyenne says widespread light snow and areas of blowing snow will continue through midday today. Temperatures will trend colder through Christmas, and strong winds with gusts of up to 50 mph are possible through Tuesday.
There are some minor road impacts from snow overnight, including slick spots along Interstate 80 throughout Cheyenne and on I-25, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
Cheyenne’s 9 a.m. temperature was 19 degrees, and things won’t get much warmer; the forecast high is 26. There is a 30% chance for continued snow through 11 a.m., and patchy blowing snow will remain possible through about 4 p.m.
Skies today will be partly sunny. Winds will come from the north-northwest at 15–25 mph, according to the forecast.
Tonight will see partly cloudy skies and a low near 12. Windchill will be dangerously low, between 0 and 5 degrees, meteorologists warn, as winds continue at 10–15 mph from the northwest.
The Christmas Day forecast calls for a high of 29. Patchy blowing snow and blustery conditions are expected to continue for Cheyenne, especially after 11 a.m. Skies will be mostly sunny, but windchills will again be dangerously low at between 0 and 10 degrees. Winds from the north-northwest will have sustained speeds of 15–25 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph.
Skies will become mostly cloudy for Christmas night, and the low will drop to around 18. Winds from the northwest will pick up to 20–30 mph with gusts reaching 45 mph.
Slightly warmer temperatures are on tap for Tuesday, but so too is a 20% chance for snow. Snow chances will be best before 11 a.m. Skies will become mostly sunny as the high reaches 35 degrees. It will be even windier on Tuesday with a northwest wind of 30–35 mph and gusts as high as 50 mph. Patchy blowing snow will continue Tuesday night under partly cloudy skies. The forecast low is 23.
Wednesday will see the mercury return to the 40s with a forecast high of 41. That will be followed by 44 on Thursday and 40 on Friday.
