CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Residents in Cheyenne and surrounding areas of east central and southeast Wyoming are advised to be cautious due to hazardous weather conditions. The National Weather Service in Cheyenne is forecasting some patchy fog this morning along the Interstate 25 corridor, followed by light snow flurries or brief snow showers today, with little to no accumulation expected.

A Freezing Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. today for eastern Laramie and Kimball counties. This includes widespread dense, freezing fog and patchy areas along and east of I-25. Drivers are warned of slick roads and very low visibility in some spots.

National Weather Service key messages:

  • An active weather pattern is expected to continue into next week.
  • Regular chances for mountain snow and occasional light snow in lower elevations are forecast.
  • Colder temperatures are anticipated.

In the short term, the main concern is the potential for dense fog and freezing fog over the eastern plains. The visibility has been reduced in the Nebraska Panhandle, with some areas experiencing freezing fog. Light snow or flurries are expected this afternoon and tonight, mainly across the I-80 corridor and in the mountains.

Looking ahead to Friday, a weakening upper-level low across the southern plains is expected to give way to chilly northwest flow across Wyoming and western Nebraska. Scattered snow showers in the lower elevations and accumulating snow in the mountains are likely due to increased west to northwest upslope flow.

For the long term, NWS Meteorologist Mike Natoli outlines a consistent parade of Pacific shortwaves expected to push across the western United States through next week. Saturday will see a brief break in activity, but a more vigorous and broader trough is set to dive southward over the western U.S. on Sunday, leading to a return of mountain snow showers. The overall track of this upper-level low is too far south to deliver widespread significant snowfall to the area, but light snow is still possible, especially on Monday. A brief warmup is likely by Tuesday, with a return of windy conditions.
