Active weather pattern to bring cold snap and snow showers to Cheyenne

(Dan Cepeda, Oil City News)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the Cheyenne area, including portions of the Nebraska Panhandle and east-central, south-central and southeast Wyoming.

Residents can expect areas of patchy dense fog over the High Plains this morning, with scattered light snow showers increasing in coverage throughout the day and evening. While visibility may drop briefly, isolated accumulations of up to an inch or two are possible.

Looking ahead, another round of light snow is forecast for Sunday and into Monday, and strong winds are expected to develop on Tuesday. According to NWS Meteorologist Mike Natoli, unsettled weather will persist into the weekend, driven by a series of shortwave troughs off the Pacific.

Although light snow showers are currently observed, significant accumulations are unlikely. A pronounced closed upper-level low moving across the Texas Panhandle is contributing to snow shower activity in the southern Nebraska Panhandle, but this is expected to wane as the system moves east.

Two subtle shortwaves are also influencing the region’s weather. These waves are bringing light snow showers over central Wyoming, with the mountains expected to receive modest accumulations in the 2- to 6-inch range. By Saturday morning, a brief clearing is expected as a transient ridge moves over the area, with temperatures in the mid-30s over the high Plains.

Looking into Next Week

NWS Lead Forecaster Timothy Trudel highlights an active and unsettled forecast from Sunday through next week. A gradual pattern change is anticipated as a long-wave trough develops across southwest Canada. This shift is likely to bring much colder temperatures, with daytime highs and nighttime lows around 10 to 20 degrees below normal on average.

Tuesday and Wednesday could see moderating temperatures, but another cold front is expected late Wednesday. Ahead of this front, strong gusty winds are possible, mainly starting early Tuesday morning.

The forecast for late next week remains uncertain as models show varying scenarios. However, the likelihood of colder temperatures and the chance for widespread accumulating snowfall increase late Wednesday and into Thursday.
