Hazardous weather outlook for Cheyenne: High winds and cold snap ahead

(Dan Cepeda, Oil City File)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The National Weather Service in Cheyenne is warning of a hazardous weather outlook for the capital city and surrounding areas in southeast Wyoming, with strong winds expected Tuesday through Wednesday.

After a two-week hiatus, high wind warnings and watches are back, forecasting gusts of at least 60–75 mph in wind-prone corridors.

Today and tonight, the region will experience patchy dense fog and breezy conditions, potentially causing blowing snow and very cold windchills. Snow showers are expected to taper off this morning, but bitter-cold northerly winds gusting at 35–45 mph will persist through the afternoon.

Despite temperatures warming briefly on Tuesday, very windy conditions will prevail, continuing into Wednesday with possible mountain snow.

By Thursday, another system is anticipated, bringing a surge of cold air and potential snow to the mountains and High Plains. The forecast for Friday and the weekend remains uncertain, but another strong arctic cold front may intensify the bitter cold, with snow chances each day.

“Light snow showers persist across portions of southeast Wyoming. … Breezy winds of 15–35 mph are creating wind chill readings in the single digits to negative teens,” NWS Meteorologist Brandon Wills states.

The focus then shifts to a prolonged high wind event starting Tuesday morning, with increased gusts expected in several southeast Wyoming areas. Wills adds that winter advisory headlines may be necessary due to strong winds and snow showers.

Meteorologist Mike Natoli explains that the forecast remains active and unsettled, with gusty winds, arctic cold, consistent mountain snowfall and occasional valley snowfall through the weekend.

“The details remain uncertain with considerable model spread particularly Friday and beyond,” Natoli states.
