Cheyenne prepares for harshest winter temperatures yet, along with snow and strong winds

John Roedel, Cap City News

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Residents of Cheyenne and surrounding areas in southeast Wyoming are preparing for a significant cold air outbreak, expected to bring the coldest temperatures of the winter season so far, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne. The NWS in Cheyenne has issued wind chill warnings and watches, effective from 5 p.m. Friday, with the possibility of expanding to additional areas. Dangerous windchills could drop to as low as minus 50 over the weekend.

Cheyenne is also bracing for two rounds of snowfall, particularly along and east of the Laramie Range. The first round has prompted winter weather advisory headlines for the Pine Ridge of the northern Nebraska Panhandle and Niobrara County. A second round of advisories is anticipated for Friday, with snowfall likely affecting travel along the Interstate 80 and I-25 corridors.

In addition to the snow and cold, gusty to strong winds are expected to sweep through the region, starting overnight and continuing into Friday afternoon. Wind gusts could reach 65 mph in some areas of southeast Wyoming, compounding the weather challenges.
