CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Cheyenne area can expect some very cold temperatures in the coming days as an extreme cold front moves through the region.
After temperatures well below zero early Saturday, conditions aren’t expected to get much warmer in the coming days, with Saturday’s high only reaching minus 3, Sunday’s only reaching a high of 2 and Monday’s failing to climb above zero.
With such extreme conditions on the horizon, area residents should be aware of the chance of frozen pipes, as consecutive nights of subzero temperatures create a significant risk of pipes freezing and bursting. Burst pipes can result in flooding and other severe water damage. There are several precautions people can take to increase the chance of avoiding the problem, however:
- Keep one faucet at a light trickle throughout the night. Run at least one faucet throughout the night at a volume slightly higher than a drip.
- Open sink cupboards beneath running faucets. This allows heat to access the pipes. In addition to any running sinks, open all sink cabinets that contain plumbing along an outside wall.
- Turn heat up slightly higher than you typically would. Higher output from your furnace will keep pipes at higher temperatures. While all buildings have unique plumbing and insulation with different needs, many buildings should be above 55 degrees.
