Cheyenne continues to endure extreme cold; gusty winds, snow ahead

(Dan Cepeda, Oil City File)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Cheyenne residents, brace for another day of extreme cold this morning, with windchill warnings in effect until 11 a.m. Windchill temperatures are expected to drop to a bone-chilling 30 to 40 degrees below zero, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.

The good news is that this is anticipated to be the last day of such severe cold, as westerly winds return and potentially boost temperatures across the area.

Additionally, Interstate 25 near Bordeaux is now included in the high wind warning, with strong winds returning to southeast Wyoming today and Wednesday. Wind-prone areas near Arlington and Vedauwoo on I-80, as well as Bordeaux on I-25, could experience gusts between 60 and 70 mph.

These strong winds, combined with recent snowfall, are expected to cause blowing snow, leading to reduced visibility and challenging travel conditions. Winter weather advisories are in effect for much of southeast Wyoming, including I-80 between Rawlins and the Nebraska border and I-25 from the Colorado border through Glendo.

Looking ahead, active weather will persist throughout the week. Starting today, winds will increase across southeast Wyoming, and snow will return on Wednesday and Thursday as the next cold front moves through the area.

The western mountains are forecast to receive significant snowfall, with winter storm watches in effect for the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges. While Friday will be very cold for the Nebraska Panhandle and southeast Wyoming plains, temperatures are expected to start warming by Saturday, signaling a calmer weather pattern.

Key Messages:

  • Dangerous windchills persist through Tuesday morning, with a gradual improvement expected.
  • Strong winds are forecast for southeast Wyoming’s wind corridors tonight through Wednesday, potentially causing ground blizzard conditions.
  • Another round of snow is expected across the region, with winter storm watches in effect for the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges.
