CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie for lightweight and high-profile vehicles.
The state agency is restricting travel between Cheyenne and Laramie due to extreme blowover risk. High winds are expected throughout southeast Wyoming on Tuesday.
Additionally, I-80 between Laramie and Elk Mountain is closed, as is US 30/287 from Laramie to Rock River due to blowover risk.
I-80 westbound from Cheyenne and I-25 remain open as of noon Tuesday.
WYDOT states on its Facebook page that the following areas will experience high winds:
- I-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie: Winds are expected to travel at 55 mph and over from 11 p.m. Tuesday to 2 p.m. Wednesday
- I-80 between Laramie and Rawlins: Winds are expected to travel at 60 mph and over from 5 a.m. Tuesday to 11 a.m. Thursday
- I-25 between Cheyenne and Wheatland: Winds are expected to travel at 55 mph and over from 2 a.m. Tuesday to 11 a.m. Wednesday
- Highway 28 South Pass: Winds are expected to travel at 60 mph and over from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday
The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued a winter weather advisory for blowing snow that will be in effect until Wednesday. The advisory affects I-80 between Cheyenne and Rawlins and I-25 between Cheyenne and Glendo.
