A suspect was arrested and is facing a felony charge of Voyeurism, after being accused of taking photos under the door of a Cheyenne store changing room.
Jonathan Benitez-Bernal, age 22 of Cheyenne, was arrested on May 22, 2020; near Lake Absarraca, just after 2:30 pm. He was given a charge of felony Voyeurism during an initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on April 28, 2020.
Benitez-Bernal is accused of taking photos, with a cell phone, under the door of a changing room, at a retail store located on the 1700 block of Dell Range Blvd.
Police say that employees of the retail store identified Benitez-Bernal from previous encounters with him. Loss prevention officers say that on February 2, 2020, between 2:15 and 2:40 pm, Bernal walked around the store without making any purchases. He left the store, but returned just after 4:00 pm, browsed the clothing, and entered a changing room stall.
Benitez-Bernal was reportedly observed lowering a cell phone, sticking the phone underneath the stall next to him, while kneeling. Eventually it was said that Benitez-Bernal seated himself on a stool and lowered his hand and phone under the gap in the stall.
Another person, identified as a 20-year-old woman, was in the stall next to the suspect, and did not notice anything had gone wrong until they could hear store employees asking the suspect to leave.
During the subsequent investigation, officers spoke with Benitez-Bernal who reportedly admitted to taking a photo.
All of those cited or arrested are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law. Charges are subject to change following official filings from the Laramie County District Attorney’s Office.
