Woman arrested on allegations of Child Abuse

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Cheyenne Police Department officials say that they have arrested a 30-year old woman following allegations that she punched and choked a small child over the weekend.

Obtained court documents say that Kayla Soundsleeper made her initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on Monday, August 10th, and was read two counts of Aggravated Child Abuse read to her.

According to an affidavit filed in the case, police were dispatched to a residence within the city limits of Cheyenne on August 8th, 2020 to investigate a report of child abuse.

Police say that they made contact with a person who said an injured child had come to their house and told them that Soundsleeper had struck them in the face while she was allegedly drunk.

Court papers say the child told authorities that after allegedly punching them in the face, Soundsleeper then proceeded to choke them. They reported to police that this alleged assault took place at Soundsleeper’s residence.

According to the affidavit, police spoke to another witness who said they saw Soundsleeper strike the child in the face and then place her forearm around their neck.

During their investigation police observed multiple injuries and dried blood on the child.

Investigators say that they contacted Soundsleeper at her residence later. They observed that she had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, poor balance and her breath smelled of alcohol. According to police, Soundsleeper told them that she had consumed alcohol.

Court papers report that law enforcement observed blood spots on Soundsleeper’s clothes as well as various blood splatters around her residence.

According to Wyoming statutes, if convicted, Soundsleeped could face up to 20 years in prison and or a fine of up to 10k.


All of those cited or arrested are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law. Charges are subject to change following official filings from the Laramie County District Attorney’s Office.
