Authorities release name of car fire suspect

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – A 41-year old man was arrested on Saturday, January 2nd, 2021 by the Wyoming Highway Patrol after it was alleged that he set fire to a vehicle on the Wyoming State Capitol Grounds.

Thomas Kimball Swei made his initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on January 4th, 2021 to hear the felony charge of 3rd Degree Arson read to him by Judge Thomas Lee.

According to an affidavit filed in the case, troopers with the WHP say Swei was seen driving his car up on the sidewalk and parking the vehicle between the two Herschler Buildings.

“Swei was then seen on video setting his vehicle on fire,” the trooper reports in the sworn affidavit.

No motive was given for why Swei had allegedly set his car ablaze in that location.

If convicted on the 3rd degree Arson Charge, Swei could face up to 5 years in prison and/or a fine of up to 5k.
