Greeley Police arrest man after child allegedly dies in his care

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Authorities in Greely, Colorado have arrested a 26-year-old male suspect who is accused of causing a severe brain bleed that resulted in the death of a female child under the age of 2.

According to a Facebook Post from the Greeley Police Department, during the afternoon hours of July 2nd, officers were requested by the Weld County Department of Human Services to respond to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colorado, in reference to a possible child abuse incident.

Detectives were notified that the child had been flown there from the Northern Colorado Medical Center (NCMC) with a diagnosed severe brain bleed that had presented at the emergency room in Greeley. When detectives responded to Children’s Hospital they stated they observed the 18-month child victim and made contact her mother.

Medical staff at Children’s Hospital advised Colorado law enforcement despite the lifesaving measures that were formed that the child had died at about 2:27 PM from the traumatic injuries she had sustained.

According to the GPD, the investigation revealed that the victim was alone with, and in the care of her mother’s boyfriend, Andy Serrel Carter, Jr. (DOB 05/08/95) in a residence in Greeley, when the injuries occurred.

“Further investigation developed probable cause to arrest Carter on the charge of Child Abuse Resulting in Death, a Class 2 Felony,” officials with the GPD stated.

According to the release, on July 8, 2021, Carter was booked at the Weld County Jail on the above charge, with no bond.No further information will be released today. The Weld County District Attorney’s Office will release any further information as it becomes available.
