A suspect, facing a felony charge, is accused of going to several businesses in an attempt to cash a check that police say was stolen.
Paperwork filed in Laramie County Circuit Court says that the 41 year old suspect has been charged with Forgery at the felony level. The charge carries a potential penalty of up to 10 years incarceration, a fine of up to $10,000 or both. All of those cited or arrested are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law. Charges are subject to change following official filings from the Laramie County District Attorney’s Office.
Police say, in an affidavit filed by officers, that they were alerted to the situation by a Cheyenne bank employee. The employee told dispatch that a person was in the bank and was trying to cash a payroll check that they believed was stolen.
Paperwork goes on to say that police contacted two people in the Bank’s drive-through. Police say that the driver of the suspect vehicle had attempted to cash the check, but when questioned they indicated that the check had come from the passenger in the vehicle. The driver said that the passenger had requested their help cashing the check, as the passenger was without ID and had offered to compensate the driver for fuel.
It was reported that the check was taken to multiple grocery stores before being taken to the bank, where the suspect was contacted by police.
The woman described as the passenger, and ultimately the suspect in the case, is identified as Brandi Stringer in court documents. Stringer reportedly told officers that another individual had given her the checks and asked her to cash the check in exchange for $50. Police say they spoke to this individual and that they denied giving any checks to Stringer or having any involvement in cashing them.
Police confirm that the check matched one of multiple checks that had been reported stolen to the bank, by a Laramie County area business.
Stringer was arrested and made her Initial Appearance in Circuit Court on November 22. During that hearing she received a signature bond amount of $2,000. A hearing to determine if she will be bound over to District Court is pending.
