Two Casper shootings leave 1 dead, 1 injured with assailants on the run

CASPER, Wyo. — A suspect was shot and killed by two Casper police officers early Friday morning after they said he pulled a gun and fired at them.

The two officers are on administrative leave per department policy while the shooting is investigated.

In one of two overnight shooting incidents in Casper, the officers were patrolling the area around Lake McKenzie Park just before 2 a.m. Friday when they found a parked vehicle on the lake shore, a Casper Police Department release states.

Officers spoke with the man in the vehicle before he ran, resulting in a chase. The release states the man pulled a weapon and fired at the officers. Both returned fire and the man was hit.

The suspect, who has not yet been publicly identified, was taken by ambulance to Wyoming Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The officers were not injured, the release states.

In a second, separate shooting incident Friday morning, police are investigating after a woman was shot in the head in a central Casper alley.

Police were dispatched to an alley of East K Street between North Durbin and North Wolcott Streets at about 3:20 a.m. for a report of a gunshot victim. The injured woman was taken to Banner Wyoming Medical Center, where she is being treated. No other information about her condition was available as of 7 a.m.

Casper Police Public Information Officer Lt. Jeff Bullard told Oil City News that there was more than one assailant, but did not give a specific number. He said the relationship between the assailants and victim was unclear at this time. No suspects were in custody as of 7 a.m., and police will issue more information as it becomes available.
