CHEYENNE, Wyo. — On the evening of Jan. 9 at about 8:28 p.m., Cheyenne police responded to a shots-fired call on the 600 block of Snake River Avenue, leading to the arrest of Byron Hunter for aggravated assault.

A witness reported seeing a man, later identified as Hunter, firing a handgun at a car while in his underwear. Witnesses told police the incident occurred during a dispute, according to booking sheets.

Upon arrival, officers found the suspected targets of the assault unharmed, sitting in a black Mercedes sedan with two bullet holes on its right side. The car was parked around the corner from the scene.

Officers surrounded the house and tried to make contact with the occupant. Hunter eventually exited the house voluntarily and was taken into custody without incident. He cooperated fully with law enforcement, and no force was used during the arrest, according to the report.

After being advised of his Miranda rights, Hunter discussed the officer’s belief that he fired a Smith & Wesson “Governor” .45-caliber revolver at the Mercedes following an altercation with the car’s occupants in his front yard. He was then taken to Laramie County Jail and booked on an aggravated assault charge.

The Cheyenne Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Hunter is currently being processed at the Laramie County Jail awaiting legal proceedings. As of publication, Hunter had not had his initial appearance in court.
