Suspect in Dunn Avenue shooting makes initial court appearance

Leandro Dominguez (Laramie County Sheriff's Office)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — In the wake of a violent confrontation on Dunn Avenue, Leandro Dominguez, 18, has been charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault and battery with a weapon. The incident, which occurred on Feb. 15, led to one fatality and two injuries.

During his initial court appearance on Feb. 20, Dominguez received a $100,000 cash bond, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Feb. 28. The charges stem from a dispute that escalated into gunfire, resulting in the death of 22-year-old Mauricio Dominguez Jr. and injuries to both Leandro and another individual involved, 24-year-old James Gulley.

The Cheyenne Police Department, responding to the scene near East 2nd Avenue and Dunn Avenue, found three adult males with gunshot wounds.

Investigations revealed that the confrontation began when Gulley, parked in the area, was approached by the Dominguez brothers. A subsequent altercation led to Mauricio brandishing a pipe wrench and Gulley responding with gunfire, according to a police affidavit. The incident resulted in Mauricio’s death.

In the aftermath, Leandro retrieved a firearm from his residence and returned to the scene, where he engaged in a shootout with Gulley, causing injuries to both parties.

Both shooters sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Although there were several bystanders in the area, no other injuries were reported, according to police documents.

This incident, which unfolded in a residential area, prompted precautionary security measures at nearby Alta Vista and Arp elementary schools. Although the schools were not directly involved, additional officers were stationed as a precaution.
