CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Albany County Sheriff’s Office identified the body found at Mirror Lake on July 4 as James Bitner, 56, of Blackhawk, Colorado. Deputies received a report of a deceased individual near Mirror Lake around 8 p.m. Upon arrival, they confirmed the presence of a deceased person, initially referred to as “John Doe.”
An autopsy later revealed the man’s identity and confirmed his death as a homicide. This led to a multi-agency investigation involving the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado First Judicial District Attorney Investigator’s Office.
Authorities urge anyone with information regarding James Bitner to contact the non-emergency dispatch line at 307-721-2526 to speak with a detective. The Albany County Sheriff’s Office is working to ensure timely updates while maintaining the investigation’s integrity.
Previously, the unidentified body was wrapped in a tarp, found without identifiable markings. The Sheriff’s Office planned to analyze fingerprints, dental records and DNA evidence to determine his identity. The limited information at the time pointed to foul play.
Deputies closed the area and portions of Highway 130 during the investigation. Although details were scarce, authorities confirmed there was no immediate threat to the public.
The investigation aims to provide closure to Bitner’s family. “Thank you for your patience and understanding in the limited information we are currently allowed to share with the public,” the Albany County Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release.
