CASPER, Wyo. — Local and state law enforcement agencies will conduct a multiagency operation to watch for impaired drivers on their way to and from Friday’s University of Wyoming/Colorado State University Border War football game.
More than 32,000 fans of both universities will travel to the Canvas Stadium for the 116th game in the long-running rivalry at 6 p.m. Friday, according to a press release from the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
Wyoming Highway Patrol Col. Tim Cameron said more than 38% of the fatalities on Wyoming highways in 2023 involved impaired driving.
“We want that percentage to be zero,” Cameron said.
To make sure fans safely get to the game and back home, agencies in southeast Wyoming and northern Colorado will coordinate law enforcement efforts.
The Wyoming agencies include:
- Wyoming Highway Patrol
- Albany County Sheriff’s Office
- University of Wyoming Police Department
- Laramie County Sheriff’s Office
- Pine Bluffs Police Department
- Cheyenne Police Department
Colorado agencies include:
- Larimer County Sheriff’s Office
- Fort Collins Police Department
- Loveland Police Department
- CSU Police Department
- Colorado State Patrol
Cameron urged fans and all drivers to be responsible and not drink and drive. If fans plan to drink, they should designate a sober driver or use a ride share service.
“Know that if you do choose to drive impaired, law enforcement will have zero tolerance for your behavior,” Cameron said.
In 2023, 144 people died on Wyoming’s highways, and 55 of the fatalities involved impaired driving.
So far in 2024, there have been 91 fatalities on the state’s highways.
The WHP urges drivers to help keep Wyoming’s roadways safe by calling the Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately, or REDDI, hotline at (800) 442-9090 to report suspected drunk drivers. Callers should be prepared to provide the dispatcher with a description of the vehicle, its location and the direction of travel.
