CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Cheyenne woman was arrested Dec. 6 after authorities accused her of stealing around $25,000 from a local veteran’s organization.

Cheryl K. Shannon, 58, was taken into custody at the VA Hospital on East Pershing Boulevard by Officer Horne of the Cheyenne Police Department. The arrest was based on a warrant following an investigation into allegations of theft and forgery during her time as treasurer for Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 1881, according to police records.

The investigation began on Oct. 22 when officers responded to a fraud report at the VFW on East 7th Street. Jeffrey Brown, the organization’s auxiliary president, told police that Shannon had used her position as treasurer to make unauthorized withdrawals from the VFW Auxiliary’s business account.

From January to September, Shannon allegedly withdrew $24,800 using a bank card issued to her for emergency purchases. She is also accused of presenting falsified bank statements during quarterly audits to conceal the transactions. Detectives later confirmed the discrepancies by comparing actual and altered bank records, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
